Suramin is an old medicine that was originally made to treat parasites. Some researchers wondered if it might help autism because it affects how cells communicate with each other. In one very small study in 2017, a few kids showed temporary improvements, but it was only 10 children and the effects didn’t last. It’s not yet FDA approved for autism, the only way to access SURAMIN is under a supervised clinical trial.
In this type of Suramin trial, everyone enrolled would receive the medication, there’s no placebo group. First, participants go through screening with blood tests, medical history, and baseline behavioral assessments.
Suramin would be given by Injection under medical supervision. Because it stays in the body for weeks, dosing would usually be limited and carefully calculated.
After treatment, doctors would closely monitor for side effects through lab work and follow-up visits or virtual checkups. Researchers would also track improvements in language, behavior, social interaction, and other measurable outcomes over several weeks or months.
The main goal is still to evaluate safety and observe measurable changes, even without a placebo comparison.

The big day may have come and gone, but keep in touch as we’re always up to something new and exciting.

For those who prefer direct medical supervision in the comfort of their home, a licensed physician can travel to your residence to administer the medication. Because this option involves dedicated physician time and travel, it is generally significantly more expensive than trial participation.
Families located in San Diego may apply for participation in a physical, in-person clinical trial conducted at the University of San Diego. Please note that these trial spots are limited, and parents must meet specific eligibility criteria to qualify.
If you would like guidance on which pathway may be the best fit for your situation, we are happy to discuss your options and next steps.
